Cinema Theatres

Actually, you can go to the movies in Sweden since the original languages are kept and subtitles in Swedish are used. However, many children's movies are dubbed and the Swedish movies aren't translated. If you want to experience unique cinema theateres, we've some suggestions. You buy tickets through the app “Filmstaden” (the City of Movies) or the website “Filmstaden”, except from the theatre in Vaxholm.

Blå himmel med moln

Vaxholm

The cinema theatre was completed in 1918 and is one of the country's oldest functioning cinemas in Sweden. You find it close to the church in Vaxholm.

The theatre shows a selection of the Filmstaden's movies. It has the technique for movies in 3D. Also, it broadcast live opera, theatre and ballet performances from, for example, the Metropolitan in New York.

We’ve never experienced that the cinema has been fully booked. So, you don't have to buy tickets in advance. Free seating.

Råsunda

Over 400 Swedish movies were filmed at this location between 1920 and 1973. Internationally renowned actresses, who worked here, were Greta Garbo and Ingrid Bergman (three Oscars). Also, the great Swedish director Ingmar Bergman shot several of his movies in the area.

Today, the movies shown are the same as other cinemas in central Stockholm (including 3D format). If you are curious about "the Swedish Hollywood" from the past, it is possible to go on a guided tour on weekdays at 3 pm (book via the website below).

Stockholm

In central Stockholm, you've some beautiful cinema theatres on street ("gatan" or "vägen"):

They’ve all gone through renovation, but the atmospheres are there. The history (linked) about them are in Swedish, so you've to translate the texts through google. We didn't find better links than Wikipedia ;).
