Östra Lagnö

On the island of Ljusterö, a narrow strip of land of 12 km to the northeast is called Östra (Eastern) Lagnö. Here, large parts is a nature reserve managed by the foundation Skärgårdsstiftelsen, and the right of public access applies.

Right at the end of this narrow strip of land, as east as you can come, you find marvellous, polished cliffs similar to them in the outer archipelago. The view is magnificent (see video)! Arrive before 10 am if you are going to sunbath – the area is much appreciated by others – and bring a picnic with you.

At the strait Klintsundet a bridge leads between Västra (Western) and Östra Lagnö. Here you can rent a kayak. The area is one of the most beautiful paddling waters in the Stockholm archipelago.

You can get to Östra Lagnö by car. Take the road ferry to Ljusterö from Östanå ferry departure and then follow the signs to Östra Lagnö. It is also possible to take the bus 626 from Åkersberga. It stops at the Lagnö village and from there it is about 3.5 km to the nature reserve.

If you go by car to Östra Lagnö, it’s very nice to stop in the “iron-village” Vira Bruk before you come to Östanå ferry departure. The village was founded around 1630, by the Swedish naval officer and nobleman Clas Fleming (1592–1644), to produce the rapiers and swords for the Swedish army. The industrial production stopped in the mid-19th century. Enjoy the historic site and small shop for iron products.

On Ljusterö, do visit the ice-cream maker Gelato&Chill which has taken the highest placements in the Swedish championship several times.
