The Old Town

When you start walk in the Old Town, we expect that you start from the Obelisk at Slottsbacken (the Palace's Hill) in the south. We divided the walk in "seven stops". Thus, it's easy for you to do the stops in a different order or slice them to different days.

Press on the button to zoom in on the map and press on the photos below the map for further information on each stop. Note: the Islet of the Knights is not included on the walk trail on the map (only if extra time in Stockholm).

Riddarholmen, together with the Old Town, is Stockholm's historic heart. A monastery was settled on the pastures for goats 800 years ago. Its remains are in the Riddarholm’s Church. During the 1600s, the nobility had magnificent palaces built for them. In modern time, several government agencies and courts are in the old palaces.

Helgeandsholmen (the Islet of the Holy Spirit)

In the 16th century, the islet was used for the purposes of the royal family. The two Parliament Houses were built 1904–1906. Thereby, the Parliament moved from its building on the Islet of the Knights to more modern and suitable premises.
